Manet painted his family, friends, and the literary, political, and artistic figures of his day, often in casual settings rather than in traditionally posed portraits. His subjects come to life on canvas, making the viewer curious to know more about these people and their lives. The Monet Family in Their Garden at Argenteuil was painted during a visit Manet paid to a friend, Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Pierre-Auguste Renoir also came by Monet?s house that day, painting his own version of the scene right alongside Manet. Woman with a Cat features Manet?s wife, Suzanne Leenhoff (his former piano teacher), while Portrait of Lise Campineanu depicts the grandniece of Manet?s physician. Finally, the woman in The Railway is Manet?s favorite model, painter Victorine Meurent, who also appears in the artist?s two most famous paintings: Dejeuner sur l?herbe and Olympia. This notecard assortment has been produced in conjunction with the exhibition ?Manet: Portraying Life,? organized by the Toledo Museum of Art in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London?the first in-depth examination of Manet?s considerable talent as a portraitist.
